Coordinators in our Community Living Team play a pivotal role in ensuring the Autistic people and families we support access the highest standard of care and are able live their lives, their way.
But what does being a Coordinator at the Association really mean and what does the role involve? We sat down with David, who joined the team 14 months ago, to learn more about why he loves what he does.
What’s the first thing you do when you start your day to get into “work mode”?
I start my day with a coffee while I check my emails.
What does a day or week look like in your role?
I currently support people across 6 of our Community Living homes. All of the homes are located close to one another, allowing me to visit each one weekly. The amount of time I spend in each home varies depending on what is happening that day, but I’m fortunate to be able to spend time with the Autistic individuals and their support teams every day.
A typical day involves visiting the homes which is important as it allows me to build meaningful relationships with the individuals I support and their families.
I carry out routine tasks, which includes conducting house checks ensuring the home is clean, as well as speaking with the support team to encourage open, constructive dialogue to explore ideas and feedback shared by staff. During this time, I also reflect on any events from overnight, giving priority to urgent matters, and working collaboratively with staff and Autistic individuals to find the best solutions.
I enjoy the fact that no two weeks are the same. My role is so varied and includes activities such as team meetings, case conferences, stakeholder discussions, training days, and much more. Additionally, I also serve as a backup coordinator, which means I provide support by assuming responsibilities on behalf of colleagues when required.
What is the best thing about your role?
It’s difficult to pinpoint just one thing, but for me, the most fulfilling aspect is the opportunity to genuinely make a difference in the lives of the people we support. There’s nothing more rewarding than working hard alongside them to help them achieve their goals and see their progress firsthand.

Are there any unexpected or spontaneous parts of your day that you enjoy?
Things can change when you support people, so you never know how the day is going to go.
Why did you choose a career in Autism?
I’ve always been passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of others, particularly those who experience unique challenges.
What motivates you at work?
The opportunity to empower others, help them achieve their goals, and witness their growth is incredibly rewarding and motivates me every day.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a similar role?
Take the leap! This role is not for everyone, but it could be for you!
How do you like to spend time away from work?
I relax by spending time with friends and making music. I regularly go to the gym and do Thai boxing classes. Travelling is also a big part of what I enjoy doing.
