Coordinators in our Community Living Team play a pivotal role in ensuring the Autistic people and families we support access the highest standard of care and are able live their lives, their way.
But what does being a Coordinator at the Association really mean and what does the role involve? We sat down with Jo, who joined the team 18 months ago, to learn more about why she loves what she does.
What’s the first thing you do when you start your day to get into “work mode”?
I get up at 4.30am and head to the gym, or I start my day sitting on the sofa with my cat and a coffee!
What does a day or week look like in your role?
I currently support 12 people in our Community Living homes, and I see them all in person throughout my week. This means I spend half a day in the office on average (maybe more if there is training or meetings to attend) and the rest out in the community.
I spend as much time as I can at the homes of the people I support with other support staff. It all depends on what is happening in their lives – for example, there may be a lot of medical appointments for someone one week and less the other.
Generally, I plan a month in advance in my calendar around important appointments and any training or meetings. Two things I like to do in my role are use technology to streamline efficiency, meaning you will rarely see me with a paper notebook; and collaborate with other staff and teams within the Association, which there are plenty of opportunities to do.
What is the best thing about your role?
I enjoy working and connecting with people.
Describe your role in 3 words:
- Fun
- Fast-paced
- Challenging
Are there any unexpected or spontaneous parts of your day that you enjoy?
There are many spontaneous things about my day-to-day, like looking for potential pet chickens!
Why did you choose a career in Autism?
I have worked in supporting individuals with disabilities my whole adult life, and I enjoy being around the people I support.
What motivates you at work?
Having a purpose.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a similar role?
Being a Community Living Coordinator is valuable work and helps you build a multitude of skills that cross over into different areas.
How do you like to spend time away from work?
I like to chill at the beach and plan trips abroad. I also spend time renovating my house and painting.
Tell us something no one knows about you.
I want to travel to space one day!
