A Magical Time for All at the Relaxed Performance of Beauty and the Beast the Musical

October 1, 2025

It was a tale as old as time experienced in an inclusive, sensory-friendly environment at our relaxed performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast the Musical!

Presented by Disney Theatrical Group in partnership with the Autism Association of WA, Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) and Crown Perth, this unique performance brought the magic and music of Disney’s much-loved Beauty and the Beast to Crown Theatre in a way accessible to and enjoyable for all.

Greeted at the venue and supported to their seats by theatre staff and volunteers from Disney and the Autism Association, attendees received a special pre-show introduction from Australian actress, author, and activist Chloe Hayden.

Chloe welcomed the audience to the show and spoke about the potentially unpredictable or overstimulating characters and stage effects involved, allowing everyone to familiarise themselves ahead of time and prepare for the performance.

Then it was up with the curtains and on with the show! Guided by recommendations from Aspect’s Autistic staff, the performance was tailored from start to finish to ensure audience members could attend, engage and feel comfortable in a live show environment.

Adaptations to the show included reduced noise and lighting levels, and the use of visual cues to act as a pre-warning for potentially overwhelming scenes or moments.

Individuals and families were also encouraged to ‘be our guest’ and enjoy the show in the ways that made sense to them – making sounds, moving and fidgeting, using noise-cancelling headphones, and taking breaks on the beanbags by the stage or in the on-site quiet room as needed. Staff and volunteers were on standby throughout the afternoon to assist.

It was a privilege playing a part in making this performance happen here in Perth and hearing the positive feedback from those who attended.

“It was such a great time. Shan was so excited, and it was great to be in an environment where she could be herself.” Hayley, Shan’s Support Worker

Thank you to everyone who joined us – we hope you had a Beauty-ful time!

We would also like to thank Disney Theatrical Group, Aspect, and Crown Perth for partnering with us to make this event possible. We look forward to creating more inclusive community opportunities through collaboration in future.
