It’s a tale as old as time, and now you can enjoy the magic of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast the Musical in an inclusive, sensory-friendly environment!
The Autism Association of WA is proud to be partnering with Disney Theatrical Group, Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) and Crown Perth to offer a relaxed performance of Beauty and the Beast the Musical on Sunday 21st September 2025.
This unique performance will be tailored, from start to finish, to ensure audience members who may need specific support can attend, engage, and feel welcomed. Creating a comfortable experience for attendees to enjoy the show in the way that makes sense to them, audience members will be encouraged to be completely themselves during the performance: to make sounds, move around, fidget, or use noise-cancelling headphones.
To bring this relaxed performance of Beauty and the Beast the Musical to the stage, Aspect’s Autistic staff assessed the show and recommended modifications that considered different audience preferences, including sensory sensitivities. Adjustments for the performance include:
- A visual story that explains the show step by step
- Inclusive and welcoming language used on the official website and during the ticket buying process
- Increased staff and volunteers to assist audience members
- Turning off all announcements throughout the theatre
- A dedicated quiet room and multiple quiet spaces for use by anyone who needs a break from the performance
Adjustments to the production for the cast and crew include noise reduction, keeping the theatre lights dim during the performance, and using visual cues to act as a ‘pre-warning’ prior to potentially overwhelming scenes or moments.
A short pre-show welcome has also been designed to introduce the audience to certain characters and stage effects that may be unpredictable or overstimulating in advance. For example, the character of Lumière’s hands are candles that light up with real fire, which will be explained in an approachable and respectful way to get the audience ready for the performance ahead.
The Autism Association is passionate about providing inclusive opportunities for the people we support and the wider community, and we are thrilled to play a part in making this performance happen here in Perth.
Joan McKenna Kerr AM, CEO of the Autism Association, expressed her appreciation of the Disney Theatrical Group’s mutual commitment to creating inclusive spaces for all.
“We are proud to be working alongside The Walt Disney Company and Aspect to bring Beauty and the Beast to Perth, creating a magical experience for all. Everyone deserves to experience the magic of Disney, and this performance is designed to do just that.
It cannot be overstated how important this initiative is in creating a community where all can participate and all are welcome.”
We cannot wait for you to “be our guest” at this very special event!
