Stepping Out: Helping Teens Step Confidently into Their Future
The move from fulltime schooling into adult life is one of the biggest transitions a young person will ever make. It is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — new responsibilities, new expectations, and a whole new world of choices.
The Stepping Out for Teens and Young Adults program, often referred to as Stepping Out, is designed to guide teenagers through this stage with confidence, clarity, and the right support behind them.
Created for young people aged 15 to 18, Stepping Out focuses on building the practical life skills and confidence teens need as they approach the end of school and begin shaping their adult lives. With support from our specialist therapy team, each teenager receives personalised guidance tailored to their goals, strengths, and future plans.
Planning for School, Work, and Beyond
The final years of school can be demanding and quite overwhelming. Stepping Out helps teens create a plan for Year 11, Year 12, and whatever comes next — whether that’s further study, training, or stepping into the workforce. The program also supports the development of strong organisational and study skills, helping teens stay on track and feel more in control of their learning.
Academic Support When It Matters Most
For teens who need extra support at school, the program can assist with accessing exam accommodations and ensuring they have what they need to participate fully in their education.
Building Real-world Independence
Adulthood brings new responsibilities, and Stepping Out helps young people build the skills to manage them. From budgeting and daily living skills to understanding their rights as young adults, the program focuses on practical knowledge that sets teens up for long-term independence
Preparing for Your First Job
Finding a first job can feel overwhelming and intimidating, but Stepping Out makes the process easier. Teens receive support with planning for employment, exploring job options, and connecting with specialised employment services. The program can also link participants with funding pathways such as NDIS School Leavers Employment Supports (SLES), Finding and Keeping a Job (FAKAJ), and the Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) program.
Strengthening Social Connections
Social confidence is a big part of thriving as a young adult. Stepping Out helps teens build and maintain meaningful social connections, supporting them to feel more confident and included in group settings, friendships, and community environments.
Supporting Families Through the Transition
This stage of life is a major shift not only for teens but also for their families. Stepping Out provides guidance for parents and carers, helping them understand their role and how to best support their young person during this period of change.
The Stepping Out for Teens and Young Adults program gives young people the tools, skills, and confidence they need to move into adulthood with a strong sense of direction. It is about more than finishing school — it is about helping teens and young adults step into their future feeling prepared, supported, and ready for what comes next.
